The History of Ramly Burger
The Ramly Burger,
also known as the Burger Ramly, is a Malaysian street burger
founded by Ramly Mokni through Pemasaran Ramly Mokni Sdn Bhd in Malaysia.
It all started back
in 1978 when our country was having issues importing beef meat due to the
fact that Malaysian Muslims were having problem to identify whether the meat is
halal or haram.
Ramly Mokni then
decided to produce his own beef burger manually with a capital of RM2, 000
only. The operation started at a flat located in Jalan Haji Hussein at Kampung
Baru, however, business was bad in the beginning as many Malays were not
into burgers.
But as time goes
by, Ramly Mokni set up more burger stalls around Chow Kit area and since then
the demand for his burgers increase among the Malays. He started selling 200
burger patties a day and the number of patties being sold was only increasing
since that day.
Ramly Burger
company was established in 1980 and just 4 years down the road, Ramly Mokni
successfully launched a factory in Industrial Area Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras and
the factory produces about 10,000 burger patties every day.
Ramly Mokni’s most
challenging moments:
- MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) rejected his loan application (MARA thought Malaysians don’t love burgers)
- Rumors that Ramly burgers were not halal
- Rumors saying that the business has been sold to another party
Ramly now has
a list of products under their brand which includes sausages, nuggets, chili sauce,
minced meat and even meatballs. The company’s revenue reaches up to RM1 billion
every year.
The Billion
ringgit business of Ramly burger
What started out as a humble beginning, making beef burger patties from
home and selling them to friends, has turned Ramly Food Processing Sdn Bhd into
a billion ringgit business.
Ramly
Burger has been a successful homegrown brand in Malaysia over the last three
decades. Its sales
have breached the RM1 billion mark and it is aiming to double that to
RM2 billion by 2016.
Ramly Food manufactures beef, chicken, prawn and fish patties as well as frankfurters, cocktail sausages, chicken and beef nuggets, and minced chicken and beef.
The company also produces its own sauces like black pepper, chilli and tomato sauce, as well as mayonnaise, bread and butter.
Founder and managing director Datuk Ramly Mokni plans to export Ramly food products worldwide.
In the pipeline is the plan to build a bigger manufacturing facility next year at Pulau Indah Halal Park near Port Klang, with an investment of about RM250 million.

Ramly Food now owns two processing plants at the Bandar Tun Razak industrial zone in Cheras and the IKS industrial park in Mukim Batu, Kuala Lumpur.
The plants collectively produce about 150,000 tonnes of products each day.
Currently, Ramly Food exports its products to Asian countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Exports command about 30 per cent of its revenue.
With the new plant, besides being able to increase production capacity, they hope to increase product offerings from 30 to more than 100. By 2016, they target export markets to contribute at least half of group sales.
In 1979, Ramly decided to give up his job as a butcher at a supermarket and began to make burger patties with his wife Datin Shala Siah Abdul Manap from their flat in Lorong Haji Hussein Kuala Lumpur.
The husband-and-wife team made the patties manually, mincing meat and adding own blend of spices to the patties, producing about 200 pieces a day.
Ramly had a burger stall in Jalan Haji Hussein off Jalan Chow Kit and gained a lot of support from friends who also began their own stalls sourcing patties from Ramly. Production then increased to 2,000 patties a day.
He later took a loan from Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd and moved to a shop-house-cum-factory in Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, where Perusahaan Ramly Mokni Sdn Bhd was established in 1984.
